Another Non-Kitchen Project – Mini Bathroom Makeover

Posted in San Antonio Kitchen Rennovation by Amy on August 16, 2010

My bathroom appears to have been redone in the 70s and is in need of another complete overhaul.  Plans are in the works to tackle this when I house sit for a neighbor for a month next summer (with only one bathrooom, this gives me the opportunity to still live here and have access to a bathroom a few houses down).  In the meantime, a mini bathroom makeover makes it feel so much better while I plan :)

Here is what the bathroom looked like before I started painting last weekend.

When I lived in my old house I bought paint to paint my bathroom during one of the Behr paint rebate weekends.  I put this paint in a closet in my house so it wouldn’t experience extreme heat or cold and apparently forgot about it.  When I was getting ready to move I found the unopened gallon of paint in the back of the closet.  I had since painted that bathroom a slightly different shade of blue so I brought the paint with me and decided that the paint would be a good (long ago paid for) way to spruce up this bathroom.

In addition to the wall paint, I repainted the frame of and hung an old stained glass window in the bathroom window, replaced the light fixture, and hung a shelving unit over the toilet for additional storage.  I really am not fond of the orange painted wood floors, but since painting a floor requires so much prep I will deal with the flooring situation during the remodel next year and cover as much with bath rugs as I can until then.   I finished the fixture installation this weekend and took a few pictures to share.

The orange floors are still there, but the blue is more soothing and really shows off the beadboard.

The new light fixture really brightens up the room. I redid the medicine cabinet a few months ago (new hinges and latch from Rejuvenation and glass shelves from a local glass shop). I also added a mirror on the inside of the door so you don't have to close it to use whatever you've just gotten out.

You can never have too much storage and the stained glass window makes the bathroom seem more private since the porch that was once on the other side of the wall is now a room!

I also installed a dimmer switch on the new light fixture which I LOVE. Great for a late night bathroom trip or any other time you don’t need all 120W of brightness.

Very nicely done – I love the beadboard and the framing around the window and medicine cabinet with the new paint!

Can you tell me the name of the blue color that you used in the bathroom? It looks like a gray-blue and looks is a perfect contrast to the white trim!

Susan I have not forgotten you! I need to rummage in the shed this weekend and will find the can then.
